This is a late 19th century Cochiti black on cream storage jar that was traditionally made and fired with natural clay and pigments. The spherical form is typical of this type with a rounded base and wide shoulder that tapers at the neck with a short straight sided rim. The painted design is split into horizontal panels with the larges panel from the rim to below the mid-body. This design band features vast open areas divided by scalloped lines with cross hatching in the corners. A thinner design band resides just above the slipped red base and features repeating "X" motifs in outlined boxes. Large jars like this were typically used for grain storage and were often kept on the floor in a dug out depression made to fit and often capped with a flat rock to keep out the vermin. Although fewer jars were made in this size they tended to survive longer because of their stationary nature.
