Carpet Yarn Textile, c. 1890

Item: HOR5190P
Material: woven of commercially spun and dyed wool
Size: 126" x 102"
Period: Historic
Origin: Navajo

A wonderful and highly unusual Navajo textile. Woven from commercially spun and dyed wool produced in America for commercial use, a piece this size was mostly likely a commission for a hotel or large private residence. The type of yarn used in this weaving is often termed "Germantown," though we are sure the wool from this piece is not actually from the Germantown mills, but another producer of quality commercial yarn in late 19th century, America. Colors of gold and midnight blue alternate in the background of the repeating geometric red central pattern. The design in this piece, though it predates the deco era, certainly lends influence to the era. Dimensions: 126" x 102".
