Navajo Germantown Third Phase Chief Variant Blanket, c.1880

Item: SOR5232
Material: germantown wool
Size: 68" x 82"
Period: Historic
Origin: Navajo

A third phase variant chief’s blanket, circa 1880's. Woven from commercially spun and dyed wool with a banded background and cross motifs. Chief blanket is a misnomer, as the Navajo tribe has a clan system, there were no chiefs. However, prominent chiefs of other tribes prized these fine blankets and they held high value from their origins in the 1800s to this day in age. Easily the most recognizable pattern, these are prized blankets and each is unique.
