San Ildefonso Black on Red Pot, c.1910

Item: BOPT5001C
Material: native clay and pigment
Size: 16" x 10.5"
Period: Historic
Origin: San Ildefonso Pueblo

This is a traditionally made and fired early 20th century San Ildefonso black on red storage jar. The jar has the form of a typical olla but is much larger in size. Black on red pottery was only produced for a short period of time at the beginning of the 20th century and here the design is split into two horizontal bands. The band above the shoulder features highly abstracted bird motifs while the design band below the shoulder is a combination of leaf and geometric motifs. The jar is in excellent condition with no restoration or repair.
