Hopi Brown and Indigo Manta, c.1880

Item: BOR5245P
Material: handspun wool
Size: 41.5" x 53"
Period: Historic
Origin: Hopi Pueblo

This is a late 19th century Hopi manta woven entirely in native hand spun wool in natural dark brown and hand dyed indigo blue. The design is typical of garments from the period woven wider than long with a wide central field of dark brown bordered at top and bottom with diamond twill woven indigo blue. The textile is an exceptionally fine example and is well preserved with original edge cords and tassels.
