Shiprock Trading CompanyContemporary BasketsBasket making is deeply rooted in Southwestern Indian Cultures. For hundreds of years Native Americans have been making baskets for both ceremonial and utilitarian purposes like gathering, storing, and processing food items; transporting firewood, water, and even babies. The baskets' diverse function explains its longevity among these cultures, until the advent of the metal containers.
These baskets are woven using the coil technique and are dyed with native vegetation, such as sunflower seeds and Mormon tea.
Today baskets are made for the art of basketry and the collector of Native Arts.
