Julian Lovato (b. 1922) learned silversmithing following his service in the military from Italian silversmith Frank Patania in Santa Fe, NM. Following his successful tenure as a shopsmith under Patania, he was given license to use Patania's thunderbird hallmark for his individual designs which were also hallmarked JL Handmade Sterling Silver (or in this case gold). Julian is from the Santo Domingo Pueblo, where he lives with his family teaching the next generations of silversmiths. His jewelry is known for the quality of the turquoise and coral he used. This necklace is an exceptional example of his work, both because it is made of 14k gold, rather than his usual silver, and because the turquoise is gem quality stone from the Morenci mine, identifiable by its deep blue color and metallic pyrite matrix. The necklace is cast, with hand fabricated gold feathers flanking the large Morenci stone set in a handmade bezel. An exquisite piece by a modern American Indian master.
