Item: BOPT5003
Material: native clay and pigments
Size: 8 1/2" diameter x 6 1/4" height
Period: Historic
Origin: San Ildefonso Pueblo

This is a late 19th century San Ildefonso polychrome pottery jar that was traditionally made and fired with natural clay and vegetal and mineral paint. This style was developed in 1880 and then phased out with the innovation of painted blackware in the 1920's. The design is split into two horizontal bands with cross hatched elements creating triangle forms accentuated with small leaf motifs all in black and red on a cream slip. The base is unpainted and stone polished. The rim has a distinctive red painted band indicating it was made before 1900.
