Begay, son of Begay: The Artistic Legacy of Kenneth and Harvey Begay
Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) began his jewelry career studying with Fred Peshlakai, the son of Slender Maker of Silver. In the 1950’s Kenneth Begay opened White Hogan with Allan Kee and Virginia and John Bonnell. It was here that Kenneth, using the exacting techniques learned from Fred Peshlakai, developed his own distinctive, modernist style. His spare and minimalist jewelry designs became hugely popular and influenced generations of silversmiths.
Harvey Begay (1939-2009) Kenneth’s son, apprenticed in his father’s shop in high school, and then joined the Navy as a combat pilot. After flying for many years, he retired as a commercial test pilot, and began pursuing jewelry again. A perfectionist, he constantly pushed himself, honing his technique by studying with famed French jeweler Pierre Touraine. Harvey’s work continues his father’s legacy as well as creating his own distinctive style, grounded in unparalleled craftsmanship.
We are pleased to present an unprecedented selection of jewelry from two of the most talented Native jewelers of the modern era, whose work represents both innovation as well as a continuum of knowledge stretching across centuries.
