Cochiti Olla, c.1850

Item: IOPT5002C
Material: Native clay and pigments
Size: 19" height x approx. 19" diameter
Period: Historic
Origin: Cochiti Pueblo

This storage jar is a superb example of pre railroad pottery from Cochiti pueblo. It has a bulbous almost globe form and exhibits the traditional secondary red band above a natural stone polished base. Those who follow Francis Harlow and Larry Frank's typology would identify this as a Kiua polychrome (Cochiti Variety.) The corner decorations in the main panels are a design that dates as early as the 1780's but in combination with the black rim and the overall form this jar is more in line with the last half of the 19th century. The condition is extremely good and sets this piece apart from others of this type.
