Native alabaster from the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico, this sculpture is by controversial Chiricahua Apache artist Bob Haozous, c. 1980. While perhaps best known for his monumental steel sculptures, this piece depicting a reclining female figure demonstrates his mastery of stone as a medium, and his ability to incorporate organic forms into sculptural elements. Haozous is the son of famed Native American sculptor Allan Houser (1914-1994). Signed, not dated.
