Tesuque Rain God
Item: BOPT5020
Material: native clay
Size: 10 1/2" x
Period: Historic
Origin: Tesuque
Tesuque Rain God figurines were popular tourist items beginning at the end of the 19th century, but most likely have a much earlier ritual origin. Tesuque Pueblo, just north of Santa Fe, was perfectly positioned to benefit from the influx of tourism to the southwest in the early 20th century. This example is unusual in its large size, as well as its brighter colors, and most likely dates to the 1940’s. Traditionally made and fired of native clay, this piece has wonderful personality and an expressive face.
