This is an early to mid 20th century set of eight Navajo ingot silver long handled spoons with snake motifs. The long slender handles are stamped in a repeating pattern of scales and at the tip a flattened snakes head is set with two round cabochon turquoise eyes. In the bowl of the spoon is a small rattle like stamp finishing the tail of the snake. The spoons are hallmarked with "UITA 6" for United Indian Traders Association and the 16 designates the trader as Don Smouse of Borrego Pass Trading Post. The UITA stamps were first used in 1939.
