This is an early 20th century Navajo pictorial textile depicting four Big Thunder deities with a highly abstracted cross at the center. The textile is woven entirely in native handspun wool in natural ivory, dark brown, carded grey, vegetal brown, and a variety of hand dyed aniline colors including red, blue, and orange. The design in the field is typical of a sandpainting with two Big Thunder figures (male and female) mirrored on either side of a cross with a central diamond representing the point of emergence of man. The textile is in excellent condition and comes from Russ Lyon Realty, Corporate Collection of Navajo Pictorial Weavings, and is published in the catalog of the same title on page 10, plate 7. Significant A/B fade.
