Navajo First Phase Stamped Silver Concho Belt, c.1910 This early 20th century Navajo First Phase concho belt features a design typical of the original Phase 1 period. The belt is comprised of seven oval shaped, hand hammered from ingot silver, each with a simple stamped design around a diamond-shaped center slot and where the leather strap is laced through. Additionally, each concho features a hand filed scalloped edge with an elaborate chiseled and stamped design and decorative punched holes. The belt includes the original leather concho backings and is finished with a simple harness buckle. First Phase belts are demonstrative of the first development of the Navajo concho belt, before the silversmiths began soldering, and were made and hammered entirely by hand. Provenance: A significant private collection of Native American art out of Colorado, collected in the 1970s.
