Item: ZOR1250C
Material: handspun wool
Size: 60" x 79"
Period: Historic
Origin: Navajo
This is an early 20th century Navajo Second Phase variant chief's blanket from the Red Mesa region woven entirely in hand spun wool in natural ivory, dark brown and dark gray, and hand dyed aniline red, blue and orange. The design is reminiscent of the Second Phase style with a background of horizontal bands alternating in dark brown and ivory and broad bands of red across top, center, and bottom. The red bands are further decorated with nine "x" motifs made from serrated bands in alternating colors, a variant of the box motifs seen in a typical Second Phase design, evenly spaced down center and halved down each side, with stacks of bands in dark brown and gray between.
