Navajo Natural Transitional with Storm Pattern Motif, c.1890
Material: handspun wool
Size: 90" x 55"
This is a late 19th century Navajo Transitional Period blanket woven entirely in natural hand spun wool in ivory and dark brown. The blanket features a typical storm pattern design with a central toothed motif and stepped lines radiating from each corner with a serrated diamond above and below and stacked banded motifs at each side, all on an ivory background. The central design sits within a rectangular shaped border comprised of a single solid dark brown band across top and bottom and doubled serrated bands, with a variety of small symbols on the interior, along each side.
