This is a mid 20th century Navajo pictorial rug by Ason (Asdza'a') Yazzie woven entirely in hand spun wool in both native natural wool colors as well as a variety of hand dyed aniline colors. The design is a landscape composition featuring Hopi Snake Dancers in the foreground and all the unique things you would find at Hopi in the back ground including a stacked pueblo village, wild cotton, peach trees, the painted desert, and the San Francisco Peaks. The curvilinear weaving technique used in the mountain scapes, the clouds, and the sky all add to the immense detail and skill put into this unique pictorial. Publications: 'Navajo Weavings with Ceremonial Themes' by Rebecca & Jean-Paul Valette, pages 289-291. The weaver, Ason Yazzie, is pictured along with additional examples of her work, demonstrating a weaving style that is so unique to her and identifiable.
